Anxiety is defined as a general term used to describe a state of unease, worry, nervousness or fear. It can be experienced to varying degrees from mild anxiety (which can you cause some apprehension and unsettling sensations, thoughts and feelings) to severe anxiety (which may largely impact your ability to cope with day-to-day life). Symptoms can affect your mental state, how you feel and behave and can also have a negative impact on your physical well-being.
There are many different kinds of anxiety disorders and their symptoms, causes and remedies vary per person; how and why anxiety manifests is unique for each individual and no one client's experience has been identical to another. The disorders can be caused by worrying about life events, objects, situations or feeling a sudden attack of terror or irrational fear. They can also be caused by the prospect of public speaking, being in a social setting, being with or away from particular people, objects and settings or compulsions and obsessions. An inability to control the anxiety could lead to shaking, dizziness, confusion, nausea, chest pains, breathing difficulties and many other unwanted physical reactions.
These anxiety disorders have been classified into 6 main types. I work with clients that have any or all of the following: Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder, Fears & Phobias, Social Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Separation Anxiety Disorder.
